  • Eighteenth Immunotherapy Treatment

    Ben
    November 15th, 2024

Well, for those that were wondering what happened to the treatment schedule, I had a bit of a scheduling conflict last time around because other life issues became more important than keeping one on-time treatment. So this Tuesday I finally went in for the eighteenth immunotherapy treatment, which also happens to have been the “final” treatment. Yay! At least it should be the final treatment as long as they don’t find anything wrong in the future and tell me I need to do it all over again.

As has become the norm, the trip to the hospital was long and uneventful. When I arrived, the nurses were happy to see me back and congratulated me on making it to the final treatment in the set. They even made me a card and they all signed it with well wishes for the future and then gave it to me before I left for the day. They told me I should come by and see them all the next time I come in for a quarterly check up scan, even if I’m not officially scheduled to be in that part of the building. It’s nice to be done with the tri-weekly trips, but I will miss the friendly interaction with the staff.

    A Big Boom

As I was leaving the treatment area and heading to the scheduling area to schedule the next quarterly scan, I heard the staff talking in hushed tones all around me and then the scheduler mentioned a building had exploded near by the hospital just a little bit ago. I asked if that explosion was what had caused the abnormal “boom” and caused the building to shake a little earlier while I had been in the infusion room. She confirmed that was indeed what had happened. We noticed the news in the waiting room was covering the incident and several of us went to see what they were saying.

There was a whole lot of speculation going on amongst the staff and the news wasn’t providing much information at the time either, just footage of the building and the fact that there were people injured. While we were watching the live news, the hospital wide PA system announced that the elevators had been locked down and everyone would need to use the stairs until further notice. Presumably, this was just a safety precaution, but it did frighten some people. Shortly after, another announcement came through to bring any free wheelchairs to the ER. We all figured that this being the closest hospital, the currently unknown amount of injured people would all be sent there.

    Heading Home

A “shelter in place” order was put out by the authorities asking everyone within a few miles of the blast to stay put and inside, while the closest people were instructed to exit the area. It appeared that part of the reason for this was they were worried about air pollution of an unknown type leaking into the nearby air. The staff told me that I should make my way to the parking lot and leave ASAP if I didn’t want to run the risk of getting “stuck” there for a while longer if they locked the area down further. So, since I did need to be home within the next 3 hours, I decided to go ahead and go.

When I got home I checked in on the issue and not much more had been discovered about the event other than confirming that there were injured people and the air quality in the area was not an issue as was initially feared. The next day I read that sadly, two of the injured people had succumbed to their injuries and as I am writing this, it seems they are still not sure what caused the explosion.

  • Seventeenth Immunotherapy Treatment

    October 3rd, 2024

Sorry for the delayed update! This past Tuesday (Oct. 1) was my seventeenth, and second to last, immunotherapy treatment. I only have one more treatment and then I’ll be done until further notice. They will still have me come in for scans every three months to make sure I’m staying cancer free, but the tri-weekly trips will be over.

This trip was really pretty average, so unfortunately I don’t have anything fun or exciting to write about this time. However, the next morning I had an appointment with the dermatologist and she told me everything externally is still looking good, and I have nothing to worry about at the moment. 🙂

  • Sixteenth Immunotherapy Treatment

    September 11th, 2024

Yesterday was my sixteenth immunotherapy treatment. The whole family came with me this time. Michelle baked cupcakes as a thank you for all the work the nurses have been doing for me over the last year and we delivered them to the office before my appointment. There were many compliments given about the cupcakes by the end of the day. 🙂

When we first arrived and were delivering the cupcakes to the back office, one of the nurses saw us and, continuing from the “Lord and Lady” conversation(s) of past visits, asked “Is this Lady X?” with a big grin! 😀 After we dropped off the goodies, I went back and signed in and sat down with the family in the waiting area. There was a bit more of a wait than average this time around, apparently because it was a busier day and they only had one phlebotomist working instead of two or three.

Michelle went back with me for the lab work and treatment, but the kids had to stay out in the waiting area (rules are rules.) It was nice to have some time together and be able to talk mostly without interruption. 🙂 One of the staff came by while I was waiting for the IV to be started and she informed us that the scan that I had last time around had indeed come back clean. So that’s definitely something to be happy about. 🙂

    After Treatment

After the treatment was finally finished mid-afternoon, we made our way to a restaurant a few miles away and met up with a friend who is attending a college in the city for a late lunch/early dinner. It was nice to be able to visit with them, even if it wasn’t for very long. We then started our journey back toward home, some napping, some staying awake… just to be clear, I was tired but I stayed awake, since I was the one driving, hehe! 😀

  • Fifteenth Immunotherapy Treatment

    Ben
    August 24th, 2024

This past Tuesday was my fifteenth immunotherapy treatment and they also had me come in early for another ultrasound scan before the treatment. So, coming in early meant that I had to get up extra early… yuck! 😀 When I arrived I made my way to radiology and checked in. After a bit of a wait (not too long though) they took me back and performed the scan. I’m not exactly sure why they use the ultrasound scan and the CT scan (alternating every three months) but I guess it gives them different data and subsequently a more complete idea of what is going on with the lymph nodes.

    Conversations

After the scan I made my way back over to the oncology center and had a bit of a wait there, but not overly long this time around. While waiting, I spoke to an older couple who were also waiting for treatment. They told me the wife had had brain cancer that had been in remission for about 6 years. Unfortunately, this past Monday she’d had an unexpected seizure and bad headache and when they had her checked out after the seizure, the doctors said the cancer had reappeared and was the cause of the seizure.

So, they are back to discuss treatment options and while hoping for the best, they are also being pragmatic and are planning a “just in case” family vacation so they can spend as much time together and with their family as possible in the worst case scenario. They said they have two grown kids and I think they mentioned at least one grand kid so I hope they’re all able to join in on the plans. The husband had an accent that I believe was probably Australian, but could also have been British. I’m not great at identifying accents. Anyway, he made me laugh because while we were talking I told them that because of the shape and size of the scar on my leg where they removed the melanoma last year, I had had some fun telling people that the scar was from the surgeon “biting” me. He told me “Aw man, you should at least go with a shark bite because it’s more believable!” 😀

    Scan Results

The labs and infusion treatment went without issue and while there was a bit of extra wait time between labs and the infusion, I still ended up getting out of the hospital about the same time as most of the previous appointments. Since I’m writing this after the fact, I can also tell you that the ultrasound scan seems to have come back “normal” according to the notification I received Thursday or Friday (I don’t member for sure which day I saw that note) but regardless, “normal” is the best I could hope for right now, so I’m happy about that.

  • Fourteenth Immunotherapy Treatment

    Ben
    July 30th, 2024

Today was my fourteenth immunotherapy treatment. I got on the road a bit late this morning but not so late that I was unable to make my scheduled appointment time. I generally pad my “leave the house” time a little bit because it helps when things don’t go exactly as planned. 🙂 Once I arrived, there was only a little wait time and then the blood work and infusion treatment processes went smoothly and quickly. I even managed to get home a little earlier than normal, and that included a quick stop for a late lunch.

So I mentioned in my last post that I told the nurses about the Ireland land title. Apparently that was entertaining enough that the story spread even to nurses that were not there for the initial story. I found this out today when one of them brought the medicine into my room to start the IV and said “Your medicine has arrived, lord.” while giggling. 😀 Another nurse did something similar when he removed the IV after the treatment was complete. I’m glad I was able to bring some entertainment to their day. 🙂

    Extended Family

This past weekend we made a quick trip to North Eastern Tennessee to see extended family (on my wife’s side.) My wife and kids make the trip fairly often, but this was the first time in many years that I have made the trip with them. It was nice to see people who I had not seen for a while. And, my goodness, some of the “kids” I met a long time ago are now teens or older… makes me feel old, haha. 😀 Anyway, if any of you are reading this, thanks for hosting us and thanks for making me feel welcome in your homes.

  • Thirteenth Immunotherapy Treatment & Tornadoes!

    Ben
    July 12th, 2024

    Treatment

This last Tuesday, July 9th, was my thirteenth immunotherapy treatment and the treatment process went just fine. This time around, my treatment room was right next to the nurses’ desk and they didn’t bother closing the room door, so we chatted a little since I’ve gotten to know many of them over the time I’ve been coming in. One of the nurses at the desk had expressed in the past that she thought my last name “Sounded cool, like it should be a book character’s last name.”

I had also mentioned to this same nurse previously that my wife had bought us a 1ft x 1ft plot of land in Ireland, which came with a certificate saying that as land owners, we could officially call ourselves “Lord and Lady” (if we wanted to.) So, the nurse was telling this story to her coworkers while we were all conversing, and one of the others said “What?! That’s so much fun! I know what my husband is getting this Christmas! How do you do this?” So apparently there will be at least one, maybe a few nurses at that hospital who are going to gain a title as well, ha ha!

    Tornadoes!

The trip home was interesting because on the way home, I hit some pretty heavy rainfall twice during my 2 hour drive. When I finally got home, the air raid/storm sirens were going off the moment I got out of of the car. Confused, I looked around the sky but it was only about 10% cloudy and otherwise sunny. Concerned by the lack of visible storm clouds, I soon found out that there was a tornado on the ground in a nearby city, so I was thankful to have just gotten home and to be with my family.

As it turns out, there were 6 tornadoes in the area that afternoon. The one I heard about first was rated EF-3. There was also an EF-2 on the ground for about eight miles in another neighboring city, and the other four were rated EF-1. Thankfully, though the twisters caused a significant amount of damage, so far I am not aware of any deaths or injuries reported.

  • Primary Care (PCP) Visit

    July 1st, 2024

I forgot to post about this on Friday, but I had my PCP visit and got a good report. The visit took a little longer than I had anticipated but some of that was the vaccine/booster application. They gave me a Pneumococcal Pneumonia vaccine because they said with the cancer diagnosis I was at a higher risk for that one. They also gave me one for tetanus since apparently it’s been quite a while since I’ve had that one.

    June 20th, 2024

Today I had another follow up visit with the dermatologist. They looked me over head to toe to make sure there were no signs of returning or spreading melanoma. Thankfully, there are no signs and I was given a good report. I’ll be due for another follow up visit in early October. Next Friday I’m due for a good old fashioned wellness visit with my primary care provider. How’s that for a little bit of a return to normalcy? Finally.

  • Twelfth Immunotherapy Treatment

    Ben
    June 19th, 2024

Yesterday was my twelfth immunotherapy treatment. I got there on time and at the registration desk an older couple was signing in just before me. The husband was hunched over with his hands in his pockets while his wife filled out some paperwork the hospital requires from us occasionally. One of the questions on the paperwork is “Do you feel at risk of a fall?” When the man’s wife asked him this question, he just slowly and silently glanced at her. She responded quickly with a bit of a sarcastic tone “Well, you’re leaning over really far forward with your hands stuffed in your pockets, so I’m checking ‘YES’!” 😀 This made me chuckle a little because she reminded me a bit of my grandma the way she said that. My chuckle prompted her to look my direction and then she told me with a smile “He’s got his doctor’s appointment shirt on.” I looked at her inquisitively so she had him turn around so I could read it. The exact wording escapes me now, but it had a silly phrase on it about getting old being serious business. I told him I thought I’ll probably be like him when I get a little older because I also enjoy wearing shirts like that.

    Passing the time

The initial wait time was a bit longer than average this trip so I ended up talking to the couple more while we waited. Well, mostly she ended up talking to me for a while, LOL! I found out that they are 79 and 80 and apparently the husband had been coming in regularly a few years ago for treatments, but had an adverse reaction to the medication part of the way through the treatments, so they had to stop coming for a while. Fortunately, in spite of having to take the break from the medication, he still comes in for checkups every six months and so far his cancer has not returned. Apparently they have also recently come back home and settled down again after splurging and buying an RV, then spending a few years traveling around the USA visiting all the places they hadn’t yet been. While all I really ended up getting out of the husband were a few big smiles, (I’m guessing he’s the quiet one of the couple 😀), they both seemed like really nice people and I enjoyed having someone to talk to while we had to wait to get called back for labs.

    Treatment

The labs and treatment went a little faster than expected this time around, considering there was heavier wait time up front. The nurses got me through lab work, got that lab work processed, got the immunotherapy medication mixed up and to my treatment room, and finally got the IV started (and finished) all in just under an hour. For perspective, less the wait time at the beginning, those parts of my trips can often take around two hours to get through. I was still there about the same amount of time, so I guess whatever caused the early hold up and wait time must have cleared quickly once it finally did.

    June 3rd, 2024

If you already read past this post and were wondering where it suddenly appeared from, don’t worry, you’re not crazy! This is a backdated post, because I forgot to let you know that I had my last follow up visit with the office of the plastic surgeon today. They told me they were happy with the healing result of the grafted surgery area and the area where they took the skin graft from. So, barring any unwanted future surgery, I guess I won’t be returning to that office again.
